Ability Recovery Services usually shows up in two places at once: on the caller ID, and as a collection entry on a credit report. Because it collects a lot of medical and school debt, the entry often traces to a bill the person never knew existed — an ambulance ride, a lab bill sent to an old address, a semester balance from years ago.
What Ability Recovery Services is
Ability Recovery Services, LLC is a debt collection agency based in DuPont, Pennsylvania — its own website describes it as a collection agency, and the Better Business Bureau’s record shows it operating since 2005, collecting delinquent receivables for educational institutions, municipal government, banks, credit unions, and medical facilities. Those client types matter: medical and educational debt are the two categories most likely to reach collections without the consumer ever seeing the original bill.
The errors to look for
A medical bill your insurance already paid, reporting as a collection. A bill that belongs to a family member with a similar name. A balance that does not match the original bill. A debt you paid the provider directly that kept reporting anyway. A debt too old to appear on the report at all. And an entry that simply is not yours — mixed files are common when accounts pass to collectors with thin identifying information.
How to dispute an entry
With the credit bureaus. Dispute in writing with each bureau showing the entry, attach what you have — the insurance explanation of benefits, the payment record, the provider statement — and keep proof of mailing. The bureau generally has thirty days to investigate.
With the company. The BBB record lists Ability Recovery Services at 284 Main St, DuPont, PA 18641, telephone (570) 207-1892. You can also demand validation of the debt itself before paying anything; our free debt verification letter template covers how.
When the dispute fails
A wrong collection entry that survives a dispute is where the Fair Credit Reporting Act claim begins — against the collector that reported it, the bureaus that verified it, or both. Damages can include your concrete losses, the harm to your credit, and statutory and punitive damages for willful violations. The fee provision is written into the Act: in a successful action the costs and reasonable attorney’s fees are recoverable from the defendant, as determined by the court. That is why this work is handled on a contingency basis rather than billed by the hour.
You pay nothing unless we win.
