This policy explains what information The Kim Law Firm, LLC collects through thekimlawfirmllc.com, why we collect it, and what choices you have. It covers this website. It does not replace our Disclaimer, which explains that using this site does not create a lawyer-client relationship and that information sent to us over the internet is not sent confidentially. Please read that page as well.

Information you give us

If you complete a form on this site, we collect what you enter: your name, email address, telephone number, the category of matter you select, and anything you write in the description field. If you call us, we collect your telephone number and whatever you choose to tell us.

Please keep your first message short. A brief description of the problem is enough for us to tell whether it is something we can help with. If we need documents — a credit report, a background check report, correspondence from a collector — we will ask you for them. Please do not send them before we ask, and please do not put Social Security numbers or account numbers into the form.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, this one records technical information when you visit: the type of device and browser you are using, the pages you view, how long you spend on them, and the site or search that sent you here. We use Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager for this, and these tools set cookies and similar identifiers in your browser. Our contact form is configured not to store your IP address.

Advertising

We advertise online, including through Google, and some of that advertising is based on pages you have visited on this site.

On a mobile device you can also limit ad tracking in your device settings. Opting out does not stop you seeing ads. It stops them being selected based on your browsing.

How we use what we collect

We use the information you give us to respond to you, to work out whether we can help, and to provide legal services if we go on to represent you. We use the automatically collected information to understand how people find and use this site and to decide where to advertise.

We do not sell your personal information. We do use information about your visits to this site for advertising, including the personalized advertising described above, and you can opt out of that using the links in that section.

Who sees it

Inside the firm, information you send us is seen by the attorney and by staff who need it to respond to you. We do not pass it to other lawyers or to referral services.

Outside the firm, personal information is handled on our behalf by our intake and practice management software, our email provider, and our website host, each of which processes it for us rather than for their own purposes. We share the automatically collected information with the analytics and advertising providers described above. We will also disclose information where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to establish or defend a legal claim.

How long we keep your information

If you become a client, we retain your file in line with our professional obligations and the firm’s file retention practices, and we will make your file available to you as those obligations require.

If you contact us and we do not go on to represent you, we generally treat what you sent us in two parts.

Documents and sensitive personal information — such as credit reports, background check reports, account numbers or Social Security numbers — are ordinarily deleted from our active systems once we have concluded that we will not be representing you. Backup copies are overwritten in the ordinary course.

The website itself does not keep a lasting copy. Form submissions are held on the site briefly and are then deleted automatically; what reaches us comes through by email.

Your contact details, together with a record of what you told us your matter was about, are generally kept. We keep them so that we can check whether acting for a future client would conflict with someone who has consulted us in the past, which our professional rules require us to be able to do, and so that we know we have spoken before if you contact us again. A conflict is often revealed by the substance of an inquiry rather than by the names in it — what one person describes as having happened to them may be the only thing that identifies a conflict with someone else who has contacted us — so the description you give us forms part of what we keep for that purpose. We ask that you keep that description general and leave Social Security numbers, account numbers and similar identifiers out of it. Where such details appear anyway, they are treated as sensitive personal information and handled as described above. Whether or not we go on to represent you, what you tell us when you first make contact is treated as confidential.

Your choices and your rights

You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. We will consider and respond to requests from anyone who contacts us, wherever you live, rather than only where a state law requires it. Some state privacy laws give residents additional rights, and we will honor those where they apply. To make a request, use the contact details below and please say that it is a privacy request. We will not treat you differently for asking.

We may need to keep the minimum information required to run a conflicts check, or to meet a legal or professional obligation, even after a deletion request.

You can control cookies through your browser settings, and you can opt out of personalized advertising using the links in the Advertising section above.

Things outside our control

Information you send us travels through services we do not control, including your own email provider, your internet service provider and the networks in between. We cannot control how those services handle or store your information and we are not responsible for their acts or omissions. This is one reason our Disclaimer asks you not to send confidential material through this site before we have agreed to represent you.

This site links to other websites, including government agencies, courts and the companies we write about. We do not control those sites and this policy does not apply to them. If you follow a link, read that site’s own privacy policy.

Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” setting or a similar privacy signal. There is no common standard for how these should be handled, and this site does not currently respond to them. You can still control cookies through your browser and opt out of personalized advertising using the links above.

Security

This site uses encryption in transit, and access to the information you send us is limited to the people at the firm who need it. No method of transmitting information over the internet is completely secure, which is why our Disclaimer asks you not to send confidential material through this site before we have agreed to act for you.

Children

This site is meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.

About this policy

This policy describes how we generally handle information. It is provided for transparency and is not a contract. It does not create rights or obligations beyond those that apply under law or under the rules governing our profession, and the practices described here may vary depending on the circumstances of a particular matter. Where the law requires something specific of us, we follow it.

Changes to this policy
