BBY/CBNA on a credit report is a Best Buy credit card account reported by Citibank, N.A., the bank that issues it. BBY is Best Buy’s ticker-style abbreviation and CBNA is Citibank, N.A., so the tradeline names the bank rather than the store. If you have a My Best Buy card, the entry is probably right. If you never opened one, or the balance, dates, or payment history are wrong, the FCRA lets you dispute it with the bureaus and directly with Citibank — and holds Citibank responsible for what it reports.
What BBY/CBNA is
Best Buy offers two cards under the My Best Buy name: a store-only credit card and a My Best Buy Visa that works anywhere, and both are issued by Citibank, N.A., according to Best Buy’s financing pages and the card agreements filed under Citibank in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s database. The store card reports as BBY/CBNA; some bureaus render it CBNA/BBY. Because Citi underwrites, services, and reports the account through its retail-services arm, the same CBNA suffix appears on the other store cards Citi issues, including the Home Depot card and, historically, the Macy’s cards that report as DSNB. Best Buy’s financing offers are deferred-interest promotions on electronics and appliances, so a balance that was supposed to be interest-free can reappear with interest months later.
Why a BBY/CBNA entry can be wrong
Electronics store cards are a favorite of identity thieves because the goods resell easily: an account you never opened points to identity theft, and the charged-off balance can reach a collector under your name. A card belonging to a relative or a stranger with a similar name can attach to your file as a mixed credit file. Deferred interest assessed after a promotional period can be reported as a balance you dispute; accounts paid off or closed sometimes keep reporting; and a CBNA inquiry you never authorized is covered in our post on unauthorized credit inquiries.
How to dispute a BBY/CBNA account
Pull all three bureau reports and note the account fragment, open date, and balance on each. Dispute in writing with every bureau reporting the item — our credit dispute letter guide covers the format — and send a direct dispute to Citibank. The card agreement directs written disputes to the customer service address printed on your billing statement; Citi’s general correspondence address for card accounts is P.O. Box 6000, Sioux Falls, SD 57117, and the My Best Buy card customer service line is 1-888-574-1301, according to Citi’s card page. Under 15 U.S.C. § 1681s-2(a)(8) a furnisher must investigate a dispute sent directly to it, and under § 1681s-2(b) it must investigate the dispute a bureau forwards, within 30 days either way. Keep everything, including a bureau result that comes back “verified” — that letter is the evidence.
When it becomes a legal claim
A furnisher that keeps reporting an account as yours after a written dispute, or verifies a wrong balance without checking its own records, violates the FCRA’s furnisher duties; a bureau that keeps the item after a dispute violates its own duty to reinvestigate. Both are compensable: actual damages for the credit denied or the rate you paid, statutory and punitive damages where the violation is willful, and attorney’s fees, which is why we handle these cases on contingency. BBY/CBNA sits alongside the other Citi tradelines on our Citibank credit report page and the issuers in our creditors and lenders directory — and our credit report dispute lawyer practice covers what happens after the dispute fails.
