What 800-428-9623 is

800-428-9623 is the Consumer Relations line for Chex Systems, Inc. It is a number you call, not one that calls you. ChexSystems publishes it on its own contact page, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau lists the same number in its directory of consumer reporting companies as the line to call to request your report.

ChexSystems is a nationwide specialty consumer reporting agency. Banks and credit unions check a ChexSystems report before opening a checking or savings account, so a record on your file can be the reason an application was turned down. Because it is a consumer reporting agency, the Fair Credit Reporting Act applies to it: you have a right to see your file and a right to dispute what is in it.

This number also appears as

The same line is written several different ways depending on where you find it: 800.428.9623, (800) 428-9623, 1-800-428-9623, and 8004289623. They all reach ChexSystems Consumer Relations.

What you can do on this line

ChexSystems directs consumers to this number for general questions, disclosures and disputes. In practice that means:

  • Requesting your ChexSystems consumer disclosure — the report itself
  • Asking whether ChexSystems maintains a file on you at all
  • Starting or following up on a dispute about something in that file
  • Asking which bank or credit union reported an item

ChexSystems states that representatives are available on this line from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central time, Monday through Friday, and that its automated system runs 24 hours a day.

The security freeze line is a different number

If you want to place, lift or remove a security freeze on your ChexSystems file, that is handled on a separate line: 800-887-7652. ChexSystems publishes it on its security freeze pages, and Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection lists the same number in its consumer guidance on freezing reports. Calling the Consumer Relations number for a freeze will generally mean being redirected.

Before you call, get the report in writing

A phone call is a reasonable way to start, but a dispute is easier to prove later if there is a paper trail. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you are entitled to a free copy of your ChexSystems consumer disclosure, and you can request it before you call so you are looking at the same file the representative is.

Read it for the specific item that is wrong — an account closure you did not have, an unpaid balance that was settled, a record that belongs to someone with a similar name, or an item old enough that it should have aged off. Write down what is wrong and what the correct information is.

What to have in front of you when you call

  • Your ChexSystems consumer disclosure, if you already have it
  • The name of the bank or credit union involved and the approximate dates
  • Any letter denying you an account, which should name ChexSystems as the source
  • Statements, closure letters or payment records that contradict the entry

If ChexSystems does not fix it

When you dispute an item, the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires ChexSystems to reinvestigate and to correct or delete information it cannot verify, generally within 30 days. The bank or credit union that supplied the information has its own duty to investigate what it reported.

Those duties are not always met. A dispute can come back “verified” when nothing was actually checked, or the same incorrect entry can reappear after being deleted. If that has happened to you, keep every letter, envelope and dispute confirmation. That correspondence is usually what shows whether the law was followed.

When a ChexSystems error becomes a case

A ChexSystems record that is wrong can keep you out of the banking system entirely, which is a real and documentable harm. Where a consumer reporting agency or a furnisher fails to meet its obligations under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a consumer may be able to recover damages, and the statute provides for attorney’s fees and costs to be paid by the defendant in a successful case.

We handle Fair Credit Reporting Act matters involving banking and check-screening reports, including ChexSystems. If you have disputed an item and it was not corrected, that is the point at which it is worth having someone look at the file.

Common questions about 800-428-9623

Is 800-428-9623 a scam number?
It is a published ChexSystems consumer line, listed by ChexSystems and by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Treat unsolicited incoming calls claiming to be from ChexSystems with the usual caution — this is a line consumers call, and you can always hang up and dial the published number yourself.

Is there a charge for calling?
No. It is a toll-free number, and your consumer disclosure is available to you free of charge under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Can I dispute over the phone?
You can start one. It is generally better to follow up in writing so there is a record of what you disputed and when.

Why was I denied a bank account?
If a ChexSystems report was the reason, the bank is required to tell you that and to identify ChexSystems as the source. That notice is worth keeping. There is more on this on our ChexSystems banking report errors page.
