Truework Employment & Income Verification Errors

When a lender or landlord runs an instant check of your job and income and the answer comes back wrong, Truework is often the company behind it. Truework is a consumer reporting agency under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which means you can see what it reports about you and demand that it correct errors. You can learn more on our Employment Background Checks page.

What is Truework?

Truework is a San Francisco-based income- and employment-verification company. It sits between your employer's payroll data and the mortgage lenders, auto lenders, landlords, and screening firms that want to confirm your job and income. When Truework's data is wrong — or a verification simply fails — an application you care about can stall or be denied, often without you ever knowing Truework was involved.

How to contact Truework

You can request your file and submit an FCRA dispute directly:

  • Company: Truework, San Francisco, CA
  • Consumer help: help.truework.com
  • Website: truework.com (see the Consumer Notice for FCRA requests)

Confirm the current dispute channel and address on Truework's consumer notice before submitting, and keep copies of what you send.

Common Truework errors we see

  • A wrong employer, job title, or start/end date
  • An incorrect salary or hourly rate
  • The wrong employment status — active shown as terminated, or the reverse
  • Outdated income that was never updated after a raise or new job
  • Your information mixed with another person's
  • A verification that fails or stalls and derails your application

How a Truework error hurts you

Mortgage, auto, and rental decisions increasingly run through instant verification. A Truework error — a salary reported too low, or a job shown as ended — can mean a denial, a higher rate, or a lost apartment. Because it happens behind the scenes, most people never learn the verification was the problem.

Truework's track record with regulators

Truework operates in a fast-growing employment-data market that regulators have started to watch closely.

Truework appears on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's public list of consumer reporting companies and draws consumer complaints at the CFPB and the Better Business Bureau over verification accuracy and the difficulty of correcting records; the CFPB has moved to rein in the broader worker-surveillance and employment-data industry. Source: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If your Truework file is wrong, you have every reason to demand proof and a correction.

Your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act

Truework must follow the FCRA. It must use reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy (§1681e(b)); it must reinvestigate what you dispute (§1681i); it may only share your data with those who have a permissible purpose (§1681b); and you can request a free disclosure of your file (§1681j).

How to dispute a Truework verification

  1. Request your Truework file through help.truework.com or the Consumer Notice.
  2. Identify every inaccuracy — employer, income, dates, or status.
  3. Gather proof: recent pay stubs, a W-2, or an employment letter.
  4. Dispute in writing, enclosing copies and keeping a dated record.
  5. Escalate to the lender or landlord who pulled it, and contact an FCRA attorney if it is not fixed.

Did a Truework error cost you a loan or apartment?

Employment and income verifications are consumer reports under the FCRA, and Truework has to follow strict accuracy rules. If a wrong verification cost you something real, you may be owed money damages — and the review is free.

How The Kim Law Firm helps

We are consumer-protection lawyers handling FCRA cases nationwide. We help people whose Truework file is inaccurate — wrong income, wrong employer, wrong status, or data that is not theirs. We do not help people trying to conceal accurate history. If your file is wrong, we pursue the correction and any damages, with no fee unless we win.

Admitted in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; available to appear pro hac vice in other federal courts.

A verification of income and employment is a consumer report too

People treat income verification as an administrative formality, and it is not. When a company sells a lender, a landlord or a screener a report on where you work, how long you have worked there and what you earn, that report is governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. You have the right to see it, the right to dispute what is wrong in it, and the company has the obligation to reinvestigate — the same rights that apply to a credit report.

  • The Work Number — the largest employment database of its kind, holding payroll records supplied directly by employers.
  • Experian Verify — a verification suite announced in July 2021 and sold to lenders, screeners, landlords and government agencies.
  • EmpInfo — a San Jose company automating the request a landlord or lender would otherwise make by telephone.
  • CCC Verify — listed in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's directory of consumer reporting companies.
  • Pinwheel — a payroll-data company connecting directly to payroll platforms rather than contacting an employer.

Request your own verification report before you apply for anything significant. It is the only way to find out whether the record shows a job you left years ago, a salary from before a raise, or an employer you never worked for. Correcting it in advance costs you a letter; discovering the error during underwriting can cost you the loan, the apartment or the offer while the correction is pending.

Frequently asked questions

How do I dispute a Truework verification?

Request your file through Truework's consumer channel, identify the errors, and dispute them in writing with documents. If it is not corrected, an FCRA attorney can help.

Truework reported the wrong income — is that an FCRA problem?

It can be. The FCRA requires maximum possible accuracy, and an inaccurate income figure that causes a denial may be a violation.

Can I sue Truework for a verification error?

Possibly. If Truework reported inaccurate data or failed to fix it after a proper dispute and you were harmed, you may have a claim.

What if the mistake cost me the mortgage?

That concrete harm is what the FCRA addresses. Save the denial and contact us.

Is the case review really free?

Yes. There is no charge, and you pay nothing unless we win.

Where we practice, and what to do if you are somewhere else

The Kim Law Firm is licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and that is where we handle matters directly.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act is a federal statute. It applies the same way in every state, it is enforced in federal court, and the deadlines and remedies do not change when you cross a state line. So the answer to "does this apply to me in Ohio" is yes — but the answer to "can you represent me in Ohio" depends on the case and on where it would be filed.

If you are outside Pennsylvania and New Jersey, contact us anyway. Some matters can be handled from here. Some are better sent to a consumer lawyer admitted where you are, and we will tell you that plainly rather than let a deadline run while you wait. Either way you will get an answer, and the review costs nothing.

The one thing that does not wait is the clock. A claim under the Act generally must be brought within two years of the date you discover the violation, and in no event more than five years after the violation occurred. Finding out late does not extend the outside limit.
